    Switzerland travel

The popularized image of Switzerland is almost too perfect: spectacular Alpine scenery, cozy mountain chalets, dazzling ski runs, window boxes spilling over with red geraniums, tidy cities on serene lakes, elegant grand hotels. Though you'll undoubtedly encounter all of these things, they don't present a complete picture of this modern country. Switzerland may guard its neutrality and its independence, but it is very much an active participant in the world. We recommend you get yourself a Swiss Rail pass and see the sites.

This tour encompasses Switzerland’s most famous cities and most handsome rural areas. The inclusion of a trip on the Glacier Express is a real bonus. This train travels a picturesque route between the Graubünden holiday region, the sunny Valais region with its glacier landscape, and the regions of the South. It takes you through a landscape rich in ancient mountain forests, peaceful alpine meadows, rushing mountain streams and mountain valleys.

It was on June 25, 1930 that the Glacier Express started summer operations from Zermatt to St.Moritz, but it was to take more than 50 years before the trains were able to also cross the impassable Furka alpine route in winter. Construction work on the Furka tunnel, begun in 1973 and was completed in 1972, now enabling services to run year-round.

The 2011 Tour was a thrilling race. Australia claimed its first ever victory, while the infamous Schleck brothers snatched up second and third places. 2012 should be equally (if not more) exciting; the inclusion of a few new stage sites will certainly spice things up. The Tour invariably promises high tension, particularly in the mountains, where the roads switchback and the steep grades separate out the real contenders. You will be there to witness all the epic moments: the climb at La Planche des Belles Filles in the Vosges, and the Alpine finish at La Toussuire.

The week starts high in the Vosges mountains for the uphill finish of Stage 7 at Planche des Belles Filles, a newcomer as a finish for the Tour. We follow the peloton the next day with a ride through the nearby Jura Mountains in Switzerland, and will be there again along the fences to witness the stage finish in Porrentruy. After two days of mountain stages we should have an indication of who the real contenders are.

From there we power through to Besançon for the highlights of an individual time trial, before heading south to the imposing peaks of the Alps. Here, with Lake Annecy at our backs, you'll ride the cols of the Parc Naturel Massif des Bauges before pedalling the famous hills and villages of the Chartreuse Massif.

Our final day of riding we will tackle the legendary climb to La Toussuire (1,705m), arriving in plenty of time to join the screaming, flag-waving fans awaiting the arrival of the leaders.

Travel by luxury motor coach through spectacular and scenic valleys, lakes and mountains. This 7 night / 8 day tour will take you to the best that Switzerland has to offer.

The Swiss alpine ambience is the ideal environment for you to be pampered or become fit and healthy. With 320 days of sunshine a year its “champagne climate” is just one reason to visit Switzerland and experience alpine wellness. Leukerbad is one of the well-being hot-spots that our Swiss Advisors consider to be the best value for money hotel/spas in Switzerland.

Switzerland's terrain of snowcapped peaks and alpine villages is a sensory delight. Discover its landscapes through an network of cable cars, chairlifts and funiculars that take you up close to famed mountains. In the Bernese Oberland, you and your family will enjoy the astonishing scenery during inspiring hikes and bike rides. And there will be opportunities to indulge in hearty Swiss cuisine in appealing inns.

Breath in the mountain air and listen to the deep. Golden silence. In the Dents du Midi mountain range are igloo-like pods that represent the height of luxury and comfort in a back-to-nature “resort”. Each igloo is accessible by boot or ski only. No après-ski bar to corrupt good intentions!

This brief coach tour follows the most scenic route between Zurich and Geneva. The itinerary is designed to show as much as possible but at a leisurely pace that still allows you time to explore on your own.

Ever thought about a helicopter flight over the Bernese Alps and landing on a glacier to have a glass of champagne? You can arrange this heart-stopping surprise for any occasion. Flights take off from near fashionable Gstaad in Saanan, but landings, as well as take offs, can only be guaranteed when the snow is firm, even during the summer months. A wondrous activity for you when next you travel to Switzerland.

There is no more relaxing way to enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Swiss Alps than on a rail tour. The Swiss railway system includes some of the most impressive engineering in the world travelling through valleys and mountain passes and past stunning lakes and villages.

The region of Lake Geneva has the world’s highest number of prestigious restaurants studded with Michelin stars. The quality and originality of dishes make Switzerland a haven for gourmet adventure seekers.

Denis Martinin Vevey is a two Michelin star restaurant notable for its molecular cuisine and with a menu of over 20 exquisite dishes. You'll need to book a long time in advance.

The Glacier Express is probably Switzerland's most scenic train journey.   It's a year-round train service between Zermatt at the foot of the Matterhorn and St Moritz in the Engadin skiing area.

Billed as Europe's slowest express, its a narrow-gauge train which takes 7½ hours to cover just over 290 km (180 miles), at an average of around 24 mph.

There is just one daily Glacier Express service in winter, but several daily trains in summer, although regular (usually hourly) local trains also operate over all sections of the Glacier Express's route.

This is a one-week hotel trek that follows a circular route around the Wildstrubel using trails that have served since Roman times to link the German-speaking Bernese Oberland and the partly French-speaking Valais. Surprisingly a lot of the trade over the high passes before rail, was done in winter with heavy oxen-pulled sledges. There are some long days but lifts and cable cars can sometimes be used to shorten some of the walks.

A 6 day / 5 night train journey tour that takes you from Grindelwald or Wengen into the most scenic regions of Switzerland.
