Progress in Belarus has been sluggish compared with other independent nations of the former Soviet Union. Inexpensive Soviet-style hotels are the norm. Invasions destroyed most of Belarus' historic structures and rapid industrialization robbed it of most of its charm. Most tourist attractions are in towns that managed to maintain the integrity of old structures.
