  • France - Classic Loire Valley self-drive holiday
    OVERVIEW
    DETAILED ITINERARY

An exaple itinerary for this self-drive holiday in France.

    Day 1 Chambord, France
This turreted, pinnacled chateau was king Francois 1’s most spectacular residence in the Loire. It is located in the heart of a huge hunting park and has a surrounding wall that is one of the longest in France. Interior highlights include the double spiral central staircase and a spectacular roof terrace. Overnight: Swiss Travel recommended chateau in Muides-sur-Loire

    Day2:  Chaumont, France (B)
Visit the chateau de Chaumont, a short drive to the west of Chambord. A lovely location on a high bluff above the river makes this modest 15th C palace very special. It was once owned by Catherine de Medici, wife of Henri II, who swapped it for Chenonceau in the 1550’s.  Overnight: Swiss Travel recommended chateau in Muides-sur-Loire

    Day 3: Chenonceau, France (B)
Head south-west away from the Loire to its tributary, the Cher. The most fanciful of all the Loire chateaux is set among beautiful formal gardens with the south wing stretching right across the river.  Overnight: Swiss Travel recommended chateau in Lussault-sur-Loire

Day 4: Vouvray, France (vineyards) (B)
Stop here to try some white wines made from the Chenin Blanc grape that can, in good years, be among the greatest vintages in France. Loire reds (especially Bourgueil and Chinon) are underrated and also worth seeking out. Overnight: Swiss Travel recommended chateau in Lussault-sur-Loire

    Day 5: Villandry, France (B)
Cross the river again and travel through Tours to Villandry. The main attraction of this Renaissance chateau is its gardens, restored in formal French style about 100 years ago. The extraordinary 12,500 square metre potager, with its intricate planting and giant vegetables, is the highlight. Overnight: Swiss Travel recommended chateau in Ballon-Miré.

Spend a week of your holiday in France exploring the lyrical Côte d'Azur.  Historically, artists have loved this area in France for its limpid light and vibrant colours. Although wealth and conspicuous glamour are the hallmark of this corner of France, the less trampled hinterland is well worth exploring at your own pace. From vantage points in elevated French villages, it was possible to glimpse the dramatic Mediterranean shoreline and reap the rewards of travelling on the quieter D roads.

In 1815 Napoléon journeyed on horseback from Golfe Juan, east of Cannes, to Grenoble on what is now known as the Route Napoléoon (Route Nationale 85). It features some of the most dramatic scenery in France. The places where he and his troops ate meals and spent their nights will thrill anyone who has a penchant for French history. A one-week drive using comfortable hotels, coupled with some satisfying meals and glorious scenery, has never made history so appealing.

A self-drive tour that includes accommodation in some of Ireland’s heritage castles.

This holiday in France is a 6-day tour encapsulating the history, gastromony and beautiful sights of Provence, France.
