Walk the wall in Northumberland. This section lies between Chollerford and Lanercost. On the 42-kilometre stretch you pass Roman forts and settlements and glorious rolling countryside. This is a one-week hotel trek that follows a circular route around the Wildstrubel using trails that have served since Roman times to link the German-speaking Bernese Oberland and the partly French-speaking Valais. Surprisingly a lot of the trade over the high passes before rail, was done in winter with heavy oxen-pulled sledges. There are some long days but lifts and cable cars can sometimes be used to shorten some of the walks.

A challenging but rewarding trek, this classic Alpine walk, Le Tour de Mont Blanc, circumnavigates Western Europe’s highest mountain, over passes and through the valleys of three countries.

On the same estate is a regionally celebrated enoteca.
